Vaginal dilators are designed for women to use to help restore function and pliability of the vagina & surrounding tissues. Dilators are varying sized probes that are inserted into the vagina using lubrication, to help to gradually stretch and “work” the vagina back to health. Dilator therapy is done to help to ease pain felt with intercourse, gynecological exams, to alleviate tension and tightness because of surgical scarring, and many other medical reasons.

Dilator therapy is done multiple times per week, at a pace comfortable for the individual. Dilator therapy is recommended after pregnancy and birth, cancer, and cancer treatment, throughout peri- and post-menopause, and during treatment for many female conditions like endometriosis or adenomyosis. Vaginal dilator therapy is also one of the top prescribed treatments for vaginal atrophy, and is also useful when combating vaginal stenosis, gender affirming procedures, and helps to deal with muscle spasms (NIH).

If the individual has undergone treatments involving radiation to the pelvic region or lower abdomen, have had surgery of the vagina or surrounding areas, have pain with sex acts and intercourse, or struggle with pain through gynecologic speculum exams- dilator therapy could be beneficial for you.

Choosing a Dilator

Dilator therapy requires the use of various dilators of multi-sizes and a quality lubrication to help to keep your sensitive, fragile skin safe.

Things to look for when shopping for dilators:

  • The dilators are made of skin-safe materials, or medical grade silicone.
  • The dilators, while firm, have some “give” to them and can bend or move slightly.
  • If new to dilator therapy, dilators with a safety cord, finger loop, or handle for control can help to ease nervousness and get things started correctly.
  • Consider the options of vibration or no vibration. Vibration helps to relax nervous, tense, tight muscles.
  • Look for reputable brands that do not use additives or extra chemicals in the making of their devices.
  • Consider a dilator set that includes a variety of sizes for your needs. Single sizes of dilators are also available from some retailers.

With gradual, regular use of dilators for therapy, the individual can feel a difference in comfort, reduced side effects, and increased vaginal elasticity.

Vaginal Dryness & Dilator Therapy

If you have vaginal atrophy or are suffering from severely dry vaginal tissues, dilator therapy can be made much easier and “smoother” if you use lubrication. Lubrication, whether water-based or silicone, provides a friction barrier to prevent skin tearing, wounds, or damage. There are numerous types of lubricant on the market, and we suggest you look for the most natural, chemical-and-additive free brands and types (CDC).

Some of our favorite brands of lubrication have been linked in our “Product Review & Recommendations” section, along with some of the best dilators.
