Males can face a myriad of issues with ejaculation, including delayed ejaculation. Delayed ejaculation is when the ejaculate is delayed beyond a reasonable point during sexual or intimate stimulation. This can occur spontaneously through life causing extreme frustration and mental anguish for the person.
Delayed ejaculation can be an occasional, temporary, or a permanent problem, and can occur at any time during sexual activity or intimate acts. This problem can also appear after decades of “normal” sexual function.
There are many causes of delayed ejaculation. Some of these linked to medications are:
- Side effects from several types of prescription medications: psychological, heart medications, anxiety and depression medication, anti-seizure medications, many more
- Alcohol abuse
- Diuretics
- High blood pressure
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation
There are also numerous physical causes that can trigger delayed ejaculation in penis owners. These could be:
- Infections
- Birth defects
- Injury to pelvic nerves
- Neurological disorders
- Prostate surgery
- Colorectal surgery
- Hormone issues
The psychological causes that can trigger delayed ejaculation are:
- Personal disconnect
- Problems in relationships with sexual partners
- Sexual fantasy issues
- Self-esteem and body image issues
- Depression or anxiety
- Performance anxiety
Treatment for Delayed Ejaculation
While there are different treatments to help to combat delayed ejaculation, psychotherapy seems to be the first thing many mental health and medical professionals direct their patients to. There are mental health counselors that are trained in helping to treat ejaculation issues and this therapy can often involve just the patient, or the patient and their partner.
The prescription medications used to treat delayed ejaculation are not specifically approved for this condition but are approved for the treatment of other conditions and is considered “off-label” use.
If you or your partner is experiencing any type of ejaculation issue, do not hesitate to reach out to your medical care team to schedule an appointment to discuss your concerns and problems. There are many options to work on ejaculation function and reclaim your intimacy!
