When beginning to learn and try anal sex or anal play activities, knowing your anatomy is a must. The anatomy of the anus and rectal areas should be known, especially if you are participating in an anal activity where anything is inserted inside of the body. In this article, we will run through the basic anatomy of the anus and rectal region to ensure you know everything that is happening there.

The Anus

The external anus is made of lots of nerve endings, with a sphincter muscle. Inside of your anal canal, there is also another internal sphincter. The external sphincter is one that you can control- squeeze, push to open, and do Kegel exercises with. Our bodies allow us to control the external sphincter, making it a voluntary action.

The internal sphincter does not allow us to control, making it involuntary. This sphincter is associated with our automatic nervous system and by our brain. Because this sphincter is involuntary, our bodies and brains must be in a state of relaxation to grasp some control over it. You might wonder how one would control an internal sphincter that you cannot see or touch, but it is possible and can be done by reducing anxiety, working on breathwork, calming the mind, and easing tension throughout the body. One has to get in touch with their parasympathetic nervous system, which helps control the brains’ relaxation and stress levels.

The Rectum

The rectum is a long tube, very much tunnel like, that connects the anus to the colon. This conduit tunnel is where the feces and waste from the body goes through to exit. While this tunnel does not “store” feces, there are always particles present. And this- the cleanliness of the colon- is what stops many in their tracks when it comes to anal play or anal sex.

The Prostate

The prostate gland is a walnut-sized gland that secretes fluid that nourishes and protects the sperm. It is located between the bladder and the penis, just in front of the rectum. The urethra runs through the center of the prostate, from the bladder to the penis, where urine leaves the body. Most often the prostate is roughly one to two inches inside of the body, along the upper interior wall. When feeling or attempting to locate the prostate, aim for the belly button. The prostate gland is also very sensitive. Many prostate owners find it pleasurable to stimulate the prostate, which can also be referred to as “milking the prostate,” which can bring on an orgasm.

The Perineum

The perineum is located between the scrotal sac and the anus in males, and in between the back of the vaginal opening and anus in women. This sensitive area of skin can be a pleasure spot for many individuals, ranging from gentle touch to extreme pressure.

These are the basic parts and anatomy discussed when talking about anal sex or anal play. It is always best to know the layout of the entire area, so be sure not to skimp on getting to know the butt cheeks, pelvic region, and abdominal muscles. These areas share nerves and nerve endings, so stimulating many of these areas at once can create a body shaking orgasm.

Remember to take the time to get to know your partners’ needs and desires, as well as your own, and ensure that the mind is as ready as the body.
